Now that we Baby Boomers have mostly all reached 60, we don’t have the constraints of our earlier years. We have either retired or earned a substantial number of vacation days. We have often come to appreciate the broader world around us. We don’t need to orient vacations toward theme parks. We can appreciate culture to a greater extent than our younger selves might have. So why not plan a trip to a city where you can find a plethora of cultural activities and amenities to immerse yourself?
For example, you could plan a trip to Madrid. There you will find several of the world’s most famous museums like the Prado and the Reina Sophia. There is a vibrant theater scene, with shows in Spanish or English. World-famous musicians and musical groups frequent Madrid. There are cultural events throughout the year, such as the Madrid Book Fair, Madrid Fashion Week, and the Madrid International Film Festival. You could attend a Flamenco or Zarzuela show. Finally, you can experience the culture viscerally by trying local food and drink, like paella, tapas, and wonderful wines from various regions within Spain.
This same type of trip can be organized for most of the larger cities. Imagine the type of experience you could have in Rome, Florence, Athens, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Mexico City, New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles.
Have fun with this Bucket List entry. I’m sure you can dream up some wonderful trips where you will have an amazing cultural experience.
