What Is Geocaching?

Geocaching is like a modern-day version of a treasure hunt. But instead of a map, you use a smartphone app or GPS to find hidden containers called “geocaches.” These caches are hidden in eco-friendly locations above ground. The name “geocaching” comes from combining “geography” and “cache.”

How to Get Started:

  1. Choose a Cache:
    • Visit geocaching.com and register to explore millions of geocaches hidden worldwide.
    • Use the free Geocaching® mobile app or a GPS device to navigate to the cache.
  2. Hunt for the Cache:
    • Keep an eye out for the cache’s camouflaged hiding place.
    • Once you find it, sign the logbook (a small paper inside the cache).
  3. Leave No Trace:
    • Follow the #1 rule of geocaching: Leave no trace during your hunt.
    • Put everything back exactly as you found it.

What You’ll Need:

  1. Smartphone or GPS Device:
    • Most people use their smartphones with the Geocaching® app.
    • Some GPS units also have geocaching features.
  2. Comfortable Shoes and Outdoor Gear:
    • Wear sturdy shoes suitable for hiking.
    • Dress appropriately for the weather.
  3. Optional Items:
    • Pen or pencil (for signing the logbook).

Tips for Older Adults:

  • Start Easy:
    • Begin with caches rated as easy difficulty and terrain.
    • Seek traditional caches (the classic type) to get started.
  • Learn the App:
    • The Geocaching® app takes some practice, but it’s intuitive.
    • Use the app’s map to find nearby caches and read cache details.
  • Terrain Matters:
    • Pay attention to terrain details on the map.
    • Choose caches that match your comfort level.
  • Container Sizes:
    • Caches come in sizes that vary from tiny to large.
    • Start with regular-size caches to get a feel for it.

What many people like about geocaching is that it is not technically competitive.  Yes, you are trying to find the hidden cache, but there is no recorded time. It’s more of a challenging outdoor puzzle.   Warning: You may get hooked!
